The Clean Nigeria Campaign (CNC) has announced that 102 local government areas (LGAs) in Nigeria are now Open Defecation Free (ODF).

The announcement was made during a two-day “2023 North East Review Meeting” in Bauchi, with the theme “Clean Nigeria, Use the Toilet.”

The National Coordinator of the Clean Nigeria Campaign applauded the efforts of various sectors, including ministries, agencies, NGOs, and the media, in achieving the ODF status for these LGAs.

He said while the progress is commendable, it falls short of the national target of achieving an ODF status for the entire country by 2025.

He added that the 102 ODF LGAs are spread across 14 states, leaving 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) with no contribution to the National Statistics on ODF.

He stated, “Bauchi State in the North East Zone has been a leader in the Clean Nigeria Campaign, with seven LGAs declared ODF and another one on the verge of achieving the status.

Across the entire North East Zone, a total of 10 LGAs are now ODF, with Bauchi leading with seven LGAs, followed by Borno with two, and Yobe with one.”

He also highlighted that the North East review meeting is aimed to share experiences and challenges among states to determine the way forward.

Similarly, a UNICEF representative revealed the urgency of stepping up clean Nigeria campaign strategies to achieve the ODF target by 2025 as the deadline is approaching.
