Residents of Gashua Road in Damaturu have voiced their frustration on social media, decrying the uneven distribution of electricity between Band A and Band C customers by the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC).

According to reports, Band A customers pay an estimated bill of ₦35,000 to ₦40,000 and receive a steady supply of 21 to 22 hours of electricity daily. In stark contrast, Band C customers, who pay an estimated bill of ₦10,000 per month, have only received a total of 5 to 6 hours of electricity over the past three days, averaging merely 2 to 3 hours per day.

Calculation of Electricity Costs:

  • Band A: ₦40,000 for 22 hours of daily electricity = ₦1,818.18 per hour.
  • Band C: ₦10,000 for 2 to 3 hours of daily electricity = ₦3,333.33 to ₦5,000 per hour.

Residents are challenging the justification for the disparate treatment. Based on these calculations, Band C customers should be receiving approximately 7 to 7.5 hours of electricity daily for their payments.

Dauda Gombe Muhammad,a resident , took to Facebook to highlight the issue:

“We make a strong call for you to fear God and be just between the people in Band A and C. By Allah, you are not being fair to us, and if you do not correct this for your own desires, we will surely take our complaints to Allah in this blessed month. We hope and trust that, God willing, you will correct this. May Allah grant us success, Amen.”

Despite the growing discontent, there has been no official explanation from YEDC. Ibrahim Umar, a correspondent for Kanempress, reported that residents are not asking for equal distribution but rather for electricity equivalent to their payments. Alai Modu Burtsa reiterated that Band C consumers deserve fair treatment.

Idriss Aminu voiced his concerns, “We need an official explanation on how they distribute the electricity or else we will not continue to pay for what we are not consuming.”

This issue is not new to the residents, who have experienced similar biases in the past. With the holy month of Ramadan amplifying their grievances, residents have warned that they will escalate their complaints to the Zonal headquarters if the situation is not addressed promptly. They expect a genuine response from YEDC’s management and customer care unit, especially for Band C customers.

Additionally, some residents have reported losses due to the inconsistent electricity supply, adding urgency to their call for a resolution.

As Ramadan continues, the residents of Gashua Road in Damaturu are calling on YEDC to address the unfair distribution of electricity and ensure that all customers receive a supply proportionate to their payments.
