Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has openly stated that the newly formed opposition coalition’s objective is not just about governance but a strategic move to unseat the APC in the 2027 general elections.
Atiku made this declaration during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, which was attended by several political figures, including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s representative, Tanko Yinusa.
The coalition, which brings together a wide range of political stakeholders, has one clear goal: to challenge and defeat the current ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the next election cycle.
When asked about the potential for the coalition to replicate the success of the 2013/2014 alliance that led to the defeat of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku was optimistic but withheld specific details on the coalition’s structure or its platform.
While some notable figures from the APC, such as former Governors Kayode Fayemi and Rotimi Amaechi, were acknowledged as part of the coalition, their absence from the press conference raised questions about their level of involvement.
Atiku’s comments set the stage for what promises to be a highly contested political battle ahead of the 2027 elections.
