Borno State Unveils Transitional Justice Framework to Foster Peace, Reconciliation

In a significant step towards promoting peace and reconciliation in Borno State, the state government has unveiled a Transitional Justice framework.

Kanempresss learned that the initiative is aimed at addressing the root causes of the Boko Haram insurgency and promoting sustainable peacebuilding in the state.

The framework was unveiled during a three-day workshop organized by the Borno State Government in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The workshop brought together stakeholders from six Local Government Areas affected by the insurgency.

Professor Usman A. Tar, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, presented the Terms of Reference for the Peace Reconciliation and Monitoring Committees (PRM) at the workshop.

He emphasized the committees’ role in fostering peace and reconciliation across conflict-affected communities.

The workshop also featured presentations from representatives of the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, and traditional leaders. They highlighted the significance of prosecution, accountability, and rehabilitation in implementing transitional justice.

Meanwhile, the Borno State Government has established peace and reconciliation committees in Local Government Areas to promote sustainable reconciliation and peacebuilding.

It was gathered that these committees are expected to commence work soon after their inauguration by the government.

The initiative has received support from development partners and civil society organizations, including the UNDP, UNICEF, and the Network of Civil Society in the Northeast.
