21st November 2024

Today, we celebrate not just a birthday but a legacy of mentorship, leadership, and dedication that has shaped the very fabric of Voice of Nigeria (VON).

Mr. Abdul-Warees Solanke, Deputy Director and Head of the Strategic Planning and Corporate Development (SPCD) department at VON, is a leader whose impact resonates far beyond his official title. His influence, wisdom, and commitment to excellence have touched the lives of many, guiding them to reach new heights—myself included.

As I reflect on my journey with VON, I can’t help but think back to when I first met Oga Abdul-Warees. He was my very first boss here at the station, during his time heading the Training Unit. It was a role that he embraced with remarkable passion, ensuring that every single individual who passed through his hands not only learned the technicalities of broadcasting but also understood the values that underpin it: integrity, diligence, and a commitment to telling the truth. His mentorship wasn’t just about imparting knowledge, but about shaping the next generation of leaders in the industry.

His vision and leadership style have always been one of empowerment. He didn’t just direct from the top; he walked alongside us, offering advice, support, and encouragement. In those early days, I had the privilege of learning from him firsthand as he took me on several visits to the Ikorodu TXS. Those trips weren’t just about learning the technical aspects of broadcasting; they were moments that revealed a deeper commitment to the craft—a commitment that continues to inspire me today.

But Mr. Solanke’s contributions to VON go far beyond his time in the Training Unit. He was one of the driving forces behind the creation of the Strategic Planning and Corporate Development (SPCD) department, a role that placed him at the heart of VON’s strategic vision. In this capacity, he has proven to be an intellectual asset to the organization—someone who can quickly translate complex ideas into actionable plans, someone who can write volumes in a fraction of the time it would take most. His analytical approach to strategic planning has been indispensable to VON’s growth and evolution.

It’s rare to find someone who combines intellectual brilliance with a genuine desire to see others succeed. Mr. Solanke is one of those rare individuals. His leadership is not about asserting power, but about lifting others up, helping them realize their full potential. I’ve been fortunate enough to have him as a mentor, and even now, years later, he continues to guide me, inviting me to join him in Abuja, SPCD Department, but when he saw relactance, he said Mustapha, you are free to join SPCD Department Lagos office. Full version is a gist for another day. He is also inviting me and offering advice on how to navigate the ever-changing landscape of broadcasting.

Mr. Solanke’s influence extends beyond VON, as he is recognized across the industry as a man of immense intellect and integrity. Whether it’s his work in corporate development, his leadership in strategic planning, or his intellectual contributions to VON’s growth, he has always been exemplified the highest standards of professionalism and commitment to excellence.

On this special day, as we celebrate the gift of another year in your life, we also celebrate the invaluable contributions you have made to the people and the organization you’ve so diligently served.
Your vision has not only shaped VON but has also created a ripple effect, inspiring and mentoring countless individuals to achieve their best. You have given so much of yourself to this organization, and today, Today RATTAWU family under the Chairmanship of your mentee honor you for all that you are—a leader, a mentor, a visionary, and above all, a man of great value, commitments and passion.
