The Borno State cultural delegation, comprising 60 members, participated in the 2024 Abuja International Carnival held from 21-25 November 2024. This prestigious event attracted participants from across Nigeria, Africa, and overseas.
The carnival featured several key activities, including an opening ceremony, command performance, street march, fashion parade, and culinary contest. Borno State’s delegation showcased cultural and historical artifacts and actively participated in all the events, earning high praise and numerous awards.
Team Borno achieved an impressive second overall position, trailing only Rivers State. The team’s accolades included:
- 2nd Overall Best Carnival King Award
- 2nd Best in International Food Competition Award
- 2nd Best in Cultural Night Events Award
- 2nd Best Carnival Queen Award
- 2nd Best Carnival Costumes Award
- 3rd Best Indigenous Nigerian Fashion Parade Award
- 3rd Best Carnival Float Award
- 2nd Overall Best State Award
During the opening ceremony, Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima expressed his gratitude to the Borno team for their participation and praised Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum for his investment in reviving Borno’s rich cultural heritage. The Honourable Minister for Culture and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, also lauded the team for their exceptional performance.
As Borno State emerges from a decade-long insurgency, its participation in national cultural festivals highlights the resilience and determination to overcome challenges and showcase its profound history and cultural richness.
The Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, elaborated: “Borno’s 25-year development plan emphasizes cultural renaissance and social reorientation as pillars of our recovery and sustainable development under the leadership of Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum. This participation marks a significant step in repositioning our state on the national cultural map as an integral and vibrant part of the Nigerian federation.
