Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni CON, has announced a strategic plan to harness investment opportunities aimed at generating employment and creating wealth. This initiative was revealed during a courtesy visit by Ms. Elsie Attafuah, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by Mamman Mohammed, Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, it was highlighted that the state government is set to explore its vast agricultural, livestock, and natural resources to promote international trade.
Governor Buni emphasized that the state had previously focused on rehabilitation and recovery programs to resettle communities displaced by insurgency. With improved security, the government is now poised to exploit the state’s potential for investment.
“As a leading producer of sesame seeds and livestock, we are investing in these sectors to position Yobe State as an international hub for exports,” Governor Buni stated. He also noted the significant financial commitment involved in the reconstruction, rehabilitation, and recovery programs for displaced communities.
“Government is providing infrastructure to stimulate economic growth and curb rural-urban migration,” Buni added. He acknowledged that Yobe, being the second most affected state by insurgency, had faced challenges in receiving support from development partners due to accessibility issues. However, with the establishment of a functional airport, the state is now more accessible to development partners.
Ms. Attafuah commended the Buni administration’s efforts in resettling communities and expressed UNDP’s willingness to collaborate with the state government on various development initiatives, including investment opportunities.
