Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State is set to make history with the construction of Northern Nigeria’s first intra-city rail network, a significant milestone aimed at transforming Maiduguri and its environs. This pioneering project, announced by Governor Zulum’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Abdulrahman Bundi, marks a groundbreaking achievement among the 19 northern states of Nigeria.
The initial phase of this ambitious initiative will feature 12 strategically placed terminals throughout Maiduguri. These terminals will connect major markets, schools, public spaces, and economically vital locations, facilitating seamless transportation for passengers and goods. The project is designed to be scalable, with future expansions potentially reaching local government areas, thereby unlocking economic activities and new corridors across the state.
During an inspection of the proposed rail terminals and routes alongside the implementation partner, Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), Borno’s Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, emphasized that comprehensive feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments (ERA), and community consultations are in progress to ensure the project’s success.
Commissioner Bamanga highlighted that the completed rail network would revolutionize transportation, bolster the economy, generate employment opportunities, and enhance the city’s transportation infrastructure. This innovative rail system will provide an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to existing transport options, supporting other ongoing infrastructure projects, including the 113-kilometre Maiduguri East, West, and South ring road expansions, which will connect various communities such as Auno, Molai, Polo, and Shagari low-cost housing areas.
Governor Zulum’s administration has already introduced electric and gas-powered taxis and buses at subsidized rates to mitigate the impact of rising transportation and living costs following the removal of fuel subsidies. Moreover, his government has undertaken numerous urban and rural infrastructure projects throughout the state. Governor Zulum’s unwavering commitment to infrastructure development is a pivotal component of his broader strategy to restore peace and prosperity to Borno, following over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency.
This innovative rail project stands as a testament to Governor Zulum’s vision and dedication to driving Borno State towards a brighter and more prosperous future.
