Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the allocation of N465 million and designated space for the establishment of a National Orthopaedic Hospital in Azare, the headquarters of Hawul local government area in southern Borno. The hospital aims to address the pressing need for specialized orthopaedic care in the northeast region.

Governor Zulum made this announcement on Thursday evening when he received members of the accreditation team from the Federal Ministry of Health, led by the Director of Hospital Services, Dr. Jimoh O. Saludeen. Zulum explained that the state government would cede ownership of the General Hospital in Azare to facilitate the establishment of the national orthopaedic hospital. He also approved N465 million for the complete rehabilitation of the facility, including the staff quarters.

“We have the General Hospital in Azare, which belongs to the Borno State Government. We will relocate it to another location and I have approved the sum of N465 million for its rehabilitation. We are not only giving the hospital but also including the staff quarters,” Zulum stated.

He added, “In addition to this, if there is any need, the state government can support the realization of the dream of establishing the national orthopaedic hospital. While the federal government might own the hospital, the greatest beneficiaries will be the people of Borno State.”

Earlier, Dr. Jimoh O. Saludeen briefed the governor on their visit to assess the proposed site for the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Azare, following the president’s approval. Dr. Jimoh also commended Governor Zulum for his support and leadership for the people of Borno State.

The delegation included the member representing Askira/Hawul constituency at the House of Representatives, Midala Balami, and his predecessor who sponsored the bill for the hospital’s establishment, Dr. Haruna Mishelia. Also present were the Chief Medical Director of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Professor Ahmed Ahidjo, and other senior officials from the Federal Ministry of Health.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary to the Borno State Government, Bukar Tijani, and the Chief Adviser to the Governor and Coordinator of Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Response, Dr. Mairo Mandara.
