The United Nations has said that this year at least 22 aid workers have been killed in South Sudan, a country that is now at the top of the list of humanitarian crisis areas according to the United Nations.

Nine million people including men and women are in need of emergency aid in the country, which is one third of the country’s population.

The 2023 Aid Workers Security Report revealed that there were 40 attacks on aid workers in South Sudan this year, resulting in 22 deaths and 36 injuries.

The acting coordinator of humanitarian work in South Sudan, Peter Van der Auweraert, said that most of the victims were citizens.

To overcome this crisis, aid workers in the region say they need 1.7 billion dollars to support about seven million people.

The conflict in neighboring Sudan has led to an influx of more than 220,000 refugees since April.
