Germany has expressed its support for the European Union’s sanctions against the military junta in Niger following the recent coup.

It was gathered that EU ministers plan to discuss the situation, including sanctions, in Spain on August 31, 2023.

The EU, a major aid provider to Niger, announced the suspension of security and financial support amounting to EUR 503 million from 2021-2024.

Germany’s Foreign Ministry, led by Minister Annalena Baerbock, held discussions with various stakeholders including the African Union Chair and the U.S. Secretary of State to work towards restoring constitutional order in Niger.

Additionally, German Development Minister Svenja Schulze engaged with representatives from ECOWAS during her visit to Abuja.

The EU also aims to impose sanctions on the coup leaders after halting development and security cooperation.

It could be recalled that despite international calls for President Mohamed Bazoum’s reinstatement, the Niger military remains resistant, prompting West African leaders to assemble a standby force.
