The Union of Northern Nigerian Senators said it does not support the use of military force to force Niger’s army to return power to the deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.
The spokesperson of the group, Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila told kanempress reporter that, although the senators did not support the coup by the Niger army, they did not support the use of military force by the Ecowas group.
“We want diplomatic methods to be used to solve this problem, but not military force,” said Senator Kawu Sumaila.
He added that their group is considering the proximity of Niger and Northern Nigeria
“Seven Nigerian states border Niger and almost all of these states have security problems, ranging from Boko-Haram to bandits.”
“If we allow the war to start between Nigeria and Niger, the disaster Nigeria will face, Niger itself will not face this disaster,” said the senator representing Kano South.
Senator Kawu Sumaila said that this will give the terrorists in these areas more opportunities to continue their mischief.
He added that “and now the situation of the poor people in this country is the pressure of life and other problems, if the true war starts, the areas of Nigeria bordering Niger will go through another disaster”.
On Friday, the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, and the President of Ecowas, sent the Senate of Nigeria a request for its approval to send the army to the Republic of Niger.
