In a significant move to bolster regional security cooperation, a high-level Nigerian government delegation, headed by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, met with Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno on Sunday. This meeting comes in the wake of Chad’s recent decision to withdraw from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), a regional military alliance dedicated to combating terrorism in the Lake Chad region.
The delegation included Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye, Force Commander MNJTF, Maj. Gen. Ali Salau, and other senior security officials. The MNJTF issued a statement on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that the delegation delivered a written message from Nigerian President Bola Tinubu to President Déby.
President Tinubu’s message conveyed heartfelt condolences and unwavering support to the Chadian President and people following the recent terrorist attack on Barkaram Island, which resulted in the loss of several Chadian soldiers’ lives. The statement highlighted the enduring commitment of both nations to enhancing collaboration to ensure peace and stability in the Lake Chad Basin region.
“This meeting underscores the robust ties between Chad and Nigeria, particularly in addressing regional security challenges and combating terrorism,” the statement read. “Both nations remain dedicated to strengthening their partnership to promote peace and stability in the Lake Chad Basin region.”
