Road Safety Commission in Nigeria warns campaign drivers against speeding

The Federal Road Safety Corps in Nigeria has warned campaign convoy drivers to avoid speeding and reckless driving as political parties intensify campaigns ahead of the general elections.The corps also urged the drivers to drive in conformity with established road traffic regulations to avoid road traffic crashes.Reports say that in December 2022, four people were reportedly killed in an accident involving a Toyota Hilux transporting a detachment of vigilantes accompanying Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, on his way to Mubi for a campaign engagement.Similarly, in July 2022, four members of the New Nigeria Political Party in Niger State died following their involvement in an accident. It was reported that they travelled in an NNPP-branded vehicle which ran into a stationary truck between Lambata and Lapai in Niger State.In reaction to the series of crashes, Corps Marshal, Dada Biu, which have occurred since the commencement of the campaigns involving political party convoys.The corps spokesperson, Bisi Kazeem, on Tuesday, Biu regretted that Nigerian drivers still violate established laws despite repeated warnings and appeals from the corps.“Dauda Biu registered his dissatisfaction, stating that despite repeated warnings, cautions and appeals made to these drivers, they still violate established laws, drive against the speed limit and engage in reckless driving,” Kazeem noted.According to him behaviours that are in total contradiction to best road use practice,” Kazeem said.Biu said that the Corps is determined to entrench ease of movement and safety for vehicular and human traffic as commanding officers have been directed to enhance the visibility of patrol teams in identified strategic locations.The Corps has put in place deployment of more operational vehicles and manpower to combat envisioned traffic gridlocks occasioned by political activities geared towards the oncoming general elections.
