In an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, former senator and civil rights activist Shehu Sani expressed his firm backing for Governor Uba Sani’s re-election bid in 2027. Sani, who recently made a political shift back to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after initially leaving the party for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), shared his political priorities for the upcoming years. His primary focus, he stated, would be ensuring that Uba Sani secures a second term as governor of Kaduna State.
Sani further revealed that if he were unable to win a seat in the Senate in 2027, he would still feel content, knowing that his efforts would have contributed to the continued leadership of Uba Sani. “By virtue of the political equation in Kaduna State, if I happen to secure a ticket to return to the Senate in 2027, I will be glad. But if I do not, I will still be at peace knowing that we have ensured Uba’s re-election as governor,” Sani explained.
The former senator, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the Eighth Senate, also reflected on the political and security situation in Kaduna State. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made under Governor Uba Sani’s leadership, especially in areas such as security. According to Sani, the state had never been so poorly governed as it was between 2015 and 2023, a period he described as marked by political division and heightened insecurity. He argued that the separation between the Muslim North and Southern Christian populations led to violence, terrorism, and a lack of progress.
He specifically mentioned the case of Birnin Gwari, an area plagued by insecurity for years, where farmers are now returning to their lands without the constant fear of paying terrorists extortion fees. Sani praised the improvements since Uba Sani’s tenure began, pointing out that mass abductions and other forms of violence have become far less frequent. “We rarely hear of mass abductions in Kaduna anymore. People now travel freely between Kaduna and Abuja, and we are grateful to Nuhu Ribadu as the National Security Adviser and President Bola Tinubu for their efforts,” he stated.
Reflecting on the broader security situation in the country, Sani acknowledged that there has been an overall improvement compared to the era of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He praised the security measures taken by the current administration, particularly those implemented by President Bola Tinubu, which he believes have been far more effective than those under Buhari. “Tinubu’s security measures are 1,000 times better than those of former President Muhammadu Buhari,” Sani remarked.
However, Sani also used the opportunity to criticize the previous administration, which he felt failed to address key infrastructural and security issues, especially in northern Nigeria. He mentioned significant unfulfilled projects, such as the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project, the dredging of the River Niger, and the construction of important roads linking northern states to Abuja. Sani expressed frustration with the lack of progress on these critical national projects and questioned why some northerners were now criticizing Tinubu’s administration after remaining silent during Buhari’s tenure.
Despite these challenges, Sani acknowledged the ongoing hardships faced by Nigerians and called on the current government to take action to ease the people’s suffering. He highlighted the extreme financial struggles many Nigerians are experiencing, citing issues such as rising rents and difficulties in paying school fees. “Nigerians are suffering; they are facing extreme hardship. There should be relief measures to ease their burdens,” he said.
Sani also urged the government to focus on public service improvements, such as providing affordable public transportation, upgrading and properly funding teaching hospitals, and ensuring that education and housing needs are addressed. He emphasized that such reforms would significantly improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
In closing, Sani spoke of the importance of national unity and the need to support reforms that could elevate Nigeria’s global standing. He praised President Tinubu for his strong stance against political cabals and encouraged Nigerians to rally behind his leadership, noting that this was the first time the country had a president openly declaring that he was not under the influence of any powerful political group. “We should appreciate that and work with Tinubu,” he concluded.
Through his support for Uba Sani’s re-election and his reflections on the country’s governance and security, Shehu Sani made it clear that he is committed to the political future of Kaduna State and Nigeria as a whole.
