Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has issued a stern warning that his administration will take decisive measures against individuals who engage in activities that insult or demean Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Abubakar Bawa, the governor cautioned against resorting to vigilante justice and called for calm among residents.
The statement comes in the wake of an incident where a butcher named Usman Buda was reportedly killed due to an alleged blasphemous comment. Some of Buda’s colleagues, who tried to intervene and rescue him, were also injured by the mob.
Governor Aliyu emphasized the importance of respecting and upholding the dignity and character of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), particularly in Sokoto State, which is predominantly Muslim.
He urged the people of Sokoto State to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and instead report any incidents of alleged blasphemy or crime to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
The governor stressed that, “Islam does not condone vigilantism, and I appealed to residents to be law-abiding and adhere to the teachings of their religion.”
While reiterating that, “my administration would not tolerate blasphemy against the Prophet, Governor Aliyu assured the people of Sokoto that their lives and property would be safeguarded.” He added.
He emphasized that any individual found guilty of degrading the personality of Prophet Muhammad would face severe consequences in accordance with Islamic laws.
The governor concluded by warning potential troublemakers to reconsider their actions, stating that Sokoto is not a suitable place for such behaviour.
