Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president of the United States on Monday, marking a historic return to office after losing in 2020. The ceremony was held indoors at the U.S. Capitol due to frigid weather, with a smaller crowd attending. Trump, 78, took the oath of office with his hand on a Bible his mother had given him. He was joined by outgoing President Joe Biden, who attended along with other former U.S. presidents and leaders.
Trump’s first actions as president included a promise to roll back President Biden’s policies, focusing on immigration and social issues. Trump is expected to sign about 100 executive orders, including measures to tighten border security and end birthright citizenship. He also plans to launch immediate deportations of undocumented immigrants.
Additionally, Trump aims to recognize only two biological sexes in the U.S. and cut federal diversity programs.
In his inauguration speech, Trump emphasized a “new golden era” for America and pledged to act with “historic speed and strength.” Despite facing widespread criticism during his campaign, Trump won a comeback victory against Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 elections, with many rallying around his populist platform.
Notable figures in attendance included billionaire Elon Musk, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. Trump’s political comeback, alongside the support of powerful figures, sets the stage for a major shift in U.S. leadership.
Biden, who did not attend Trump’s 2021 inauguration, acknowledged the significance of the event by holding a traditional tea with the new president and his spouse at the White House. In a symbolic gesture, Biden also pardoned several people, including his family members, as his final act in office.
With his return to the White House, Trump’s presidency promises to be full of surprises, with potential global implications. He has already received congratulations from Russian President Vladimir Putin, signaling a shift in foreign relations and an uncertain global landscape ahead.
