Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has accused the World Bank of seeking “to coerce” the government over its anti-LGBT legislation.

This follows the announcement by the world bank that it was suspending any new loans to Uganda on the grounds that the law against same-sex relations contradicts its values.

In a statement posted on social media, President Museveni said “Uganda will develop with or without loans”.

He said it was unfortunate that the world Bank was seeking to “coerce Uganda into abandoning its faith, culture, principles and sovereignty, using money”.

President Museveni said the world Bank really under-estimated all Africans, as the country does not need pressure from anybody to know how to solve problems in its society. The world bank are our problems,” he added.

President Museveni said that Uganda was continuing discussions with the World Bank “so that both can avoid this diversion if possible”.

President Museveni had in May signed the anti-LGBT law, which imposes death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality” and a 20-year jail term for “promoting” homosexuality.

The World Bank joins others including the US in imposing sanctions against Uganda over the Anti-Homosexuality law.

Ugandan and global human rights groups have condemned the legislation
