UN and FG launch resource center to enhance women’s participation in politics in Borno

The National Centre for Women Development (NCWD) has partnered with the United Nations (UN) to inaugurate a new initiative in Maiduguri. The purpose of this collaboration is to establish a resource center supporting women’s active involvement in politics and to provide mentorship opportunities for women aspiring to enter the political sphere in Borno state.

Dr. Asabe Vilita-Bashir ,the Director-General of the NCWD announced the establishment of a new center in Maiduguri.

This center aims to empower women in politics by providing them with information resources and networking opportunities. It is designed to enhance female productivity and enable their effective participation in political activities. The center will offer various facilities such as electronic equipment internet access counseling services and access to knowledge products. This initiative is expected to make a significant impact on female politicians enabling them to access the necessary support to succeed in their political careers.

She noted that it is no news that Women’s representation in Nigerian politics has been on a downward slide since 2011, and extremely low in Borno State.

According to her, the resource centre is being launched to complement the current administration in its pursuit to advance women in politics and governance in Nigeria.

“This Resource Centre in Maiduguri is the third to be launched. The first was launched on the 14th of November 2022 at the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development (MBNCWD), Abuja while the second was launched on the 12th of July 2023 in Calabar at the Cross River State’s Ministry of Women Affairs.

“As we celebrate this Centre, we continue to appreciate the UN Women for their decision to partner with the MBNCWD on this initiative and the Canadian Government for their huge support so far,” said Vilita.

In a recent development it was reported that the United Nations along with UN Women has taken a significant step towards promoting gender equality and women’s participation in governance. Beatrice Eyong the UN Women’s Country Representative in Nigeria emphasized the organization’s ongoing efforts in this regard.

She said also,the launch of the new centre in Maiduguri clearly indicates a shared commitment to empower women and enhance their political engagement in the North-East region. This initiative represents a crucial milestone in the journey towards achieving gender equality and ensuring women’s meaningful participation in decision-making processes.
