World Radio Day: Voice Of Nigeria Provides 123 Free Eye Glasses

In Commemoration of 2023 world Radio Day leadership of one of the leading Union in Voice of Nigeria Lagos Chapter, Comrade Zanna Ibrahim Mustapha, facilitated and secured 123 free Eye glasses to his members.

This good leadership initiative by the Chairman RATTAWU Comrade Zanna Ibrahim, has been extended even to the non RATTAWU members of NUJ and Senior Staff Association including that of the sister organisation and neighbours Radio Nigeria and bond FM Staff have also benefited from free Eye Test and free glasses.

In all, attended to 150 members of staff provided glasses for 123 members 3 members confirmed cataracts while 2 confirmed pterygium.

While declaring the summit open the Chairman of the summit who is the Director General of Voice of Nigeria Dr Osita Okechukwu, has called for continuous peaceful co-existence among Nigerians and pray for hitch free 2023 elections.

He made the call at the 2nd Grand Media Summit hosted by the VON chapter of the Radio, Television and Theatre and Arts Workers Union, in Lagos.

The Deputy Director News Funke Atohengbe who represented the Director General, commended the Radio Television Theatre And Art Workers Union of Nigeria, headed by Comrade Zanna Ibrahim Mustapha and his Executive for putting this laudable initiative.

She further, on behalf of DG promised to support any good idea from the union leadership and declared the 2nd Grand Media Summit open.

The passionate RATTAWU Chairman Voice of Nigeria Lagos Chapter Comrade Zanna Ibrahim Mustapha, in his speech called for Staff welfarism, training and retraining of staff as well as clearing of all outstanding claims and sustainability of monthly regular impress.

Furthermore, the Chairman highlighted the importance of” radio as it offers education opportunities by showcasing potentials and celebrating unique talents & feats of citizens. It equally serves as a watchdog for the public interest- by creating public awareness of what is going on with businesses, government policies and health care. A ready example was the role it played in providing information that helped in combating the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.”

“Radio equally plays an important role in giving people the opportunity to act against injustice, oppression and misdeeds that they otherwise wouldn’t know about. Thus, in a way, it helps in bringing many social issues to life that otherwise would remain unknown to many people.”

“Radio as media can be a powerful force for change in both developed and developing countries. In developing countries, it can have an important role in advancing a pro-poor development agenda, as well as supporting economic growth by stimulating consumer markets.”

“Where it is able to effectively fulfil the roles of watchdog, gatekeeper and agenda-setter, it can improve governance by raising citizen awareness of social issues, enabling citizens to hold their governments to account, curbing corruption, and creating a civic forum for debate. It can also amplify the voice of marginalised and excluded groups.”

The Lagos State council RATTAWU Chairman, Comrade Ishola Adejumo, expressed appreciation to the leadership of Voice of Nigeria Lagos Chapter and call on other chapters to emulate the initiative.

The Lagos Council boss, acknowledged the importance of radio and emphasised on establishment of more radio stations in Lagos.

” Radio is important tool for enlightenment, education and entertainment to the public good.”

He finally advocated for establishment of more community Radio stations in Lagos and Nigeria respectively
