The partnership between NNPC CMEC and GE highlights the importance of collaboration between local and international entities in driving the project forward. With a planned capacity of 1350 megawatts the GIPP is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s power generation thereby addressing the persistent issue of electricity shortages that often hamper economic growth and development.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s presence at the event was a show of solidarity and support for Mele Kyari who hails from Borno State and serves as the group chief executive officer of NNPC. This collaboration not only signifies the commitment of the government to the project but also showcases the support and involvement of various stakeholders.
The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria’s presence at the ceremony demonstrates the strong relationship between Nigeria and China in the area of infrastructure development. Chinese companies have played a vital role in Nigeria’s quest for improved electricity supply and this project is another testament to the fruitful partnership between the two nations.
Overall the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant Project marks an important milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards achieving reliable and sustainable power supply. It is a significant step in the country’s efforts to harness its vast energy resources and drive economic growth and development for the benefit of its citizens.
The Gwagwalada Independent Power Project (GIPP) was initiated to address Nigeria’s growing need for additional power generation capacity. This necessity arises from the increasing demand for gas supply to fuel power plants across the country. Currently the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline is under construction and will facilitate the delivery of gas to the GIPP.
To meet the fuel requirements of the GIPP a long-term Gas Sales Purchase and Aggregation Agreement has been established with the Shell Petroleum Development Company Joint Venture (SPDCJV). This agreement ensures a reliable and consistent supply of gas to the power plant.
The GIPP project comprises of three power train blocks each with a capacity of 450MW. Each block will be equipped with two General Electric (GE) GT132 gas turbine generators two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG one steam turbine electric generator one direct air-cooling condenser balance of plant equipment and a black start diesel generator.
The implementation of the Gwagwalada Independent Power Project will not only contribute to meeting Nigeria’s power demands but also foster economic development and pave the way for progress in various sectors.
The president also commend Governor Zulum’s performance as a governor and express his satisfaction with the the level of development the governor brings on board since becoming the governor of the state.
