The Borno State Government has declared Thursday, 26th June, a public holiday in observance of the Islamic New Year 1447 AH.
This was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bukar Tijani, who said the holiday applies across all sectors—including government offices, schools, and financial institutions.
Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar, marks the beginning of the new year for Muslims around the world. The government urged residents to use this period for reflection, spiritual renewal, and commitment to peace and development.
“On behalf of the government of Borno State, I wish to declare Thursday, 26th June, as a public holiday to mark the new Islamic year 1447 AH,” Tijani said.
He congratulated the Muslim Ummah and all residents of the state on witnessing the new year, emphasizing the need for prayer, unity, and renewed dedication to building a stronger Borno.
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum also extended his best wishes to the people, encouraging continuous prayers for peace, progress, and recovery, especially as the state continues efforts in post-insurgency rebuilding.
The SSG reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to good governance and delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Borno.
Reporter’s Note: The Islamic New Year is a significant time for reflection among Muslims. In Borno, where recovery and resilience are ongoing themes, this holiday serves as a moment of hope and renewal.
