Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness. The news of his death was confirmed this Sunday by family sources and former presidential aides.

Buhari died at a private clinic in London, United Kingdom, where he had been receiving medical treatment for undisclosed health complications. According to sources close to the family, he was surrounded by close relatives and aides in his final hours.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari first came into national prominence as a military ruler following the 1983 coup that ousted President Shehu Shagari. He served as Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and after years away from public office, made a historic comeback as a civilian president under the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeating incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.

During his two-term tenure (2015–2023), Buhari focused on anti-corruption reforms, infrastructural development, and the fight against Boko Haram insurgency. His administration, however, also faced criticism over rising insecurity, economic hardship, and alleged human rights abuses.

Tributes have begun to pour in from across Nigeria and around the world. President Bola Tinubu expressed “deep sorrow and national mourning,” describing Buhari as “a patriot who gave his all in service to the nation.”

Buhari’s body is expected to be flown back to Nigeria for burial in accordance with Islamic rites. The federal government is expected to announce official mourning arrangements in the coming hours.

This marks the end of an era for a man who shaped Nigeria’s political and military history for over four decades.
