The Joint Public Service Negotiating Council (JPSNC) has reassured federal civil servants that the government is actively working to resolve the salary discrepancies that have affected workers’ January pay.

Mr. Benjamin Anthony, the National Chairman of the council, addressed the concerns raised by federal workers regarding reductions in their January salaries, which were reportedly lower than those received in the previous months of October through December 2024.

Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, Anthony confirmed that the salary shortfalls were caused by a “systematic error” in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

“We received complaints, not in writing, from workers regarding reductions in their January salaries compared to previous months,” Anthony explained. “In response, we issued a memo to all industrial unions, asking them to gather feedback from their members so that we can escalate the matter to the federal government for correction.”

While unconfirmed reports from IPPIS indicated that the issue was due to a systematic mistake in the system, Anthony reassured workers that the government is working diligently to correct it. “They are aware of the issue and are taking steps to fix it,” he said.

The JPSNC chairman encouraged affected workers to report any discrepancies through their respective industrial unions to ensure a swift resolution. He also revealed that they had already reached out to the Head of Service of the Federation, who promised to forward the complaints to the Accountant General’s office for investigation. “The Head of Service assured us that if any mistakes are found, all affected workers will receive their correct salaries,” Anthony added.

Anthony also suggested that part of the issue could be tied to a peculiar allowance negotiated by the council, which the government had agreed to continue paying. He believes this allowance was mistakenly omitted by the IPPIS system. “The government has agreed to continue paying the peculiar allowance, and I believe it was mistakenly removed by the system. It will be reinstated, and workers will receive their full entitlements,” he assured.

With confidence in the Head of Service’s commitment to resolving the issue swiftly, Anthony emphasized the importance of workers checking their salary structures to ensure their expected earnings before raising concerns.

As the situation is addressed, the JPSNC is working closely with government officials to ensure that the salary discrepancies are corrected, giving civil servants the reassurance they need.
