In a significant move aimed at enhancing urban aesthetics and infrastructure in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, Governor Mai Mala Buni has approved the remodeling and redesign of the city’s four major roundabouts. This initiative is part of the administration’s broader urban renewal agenda, complementing the ongoing construction of Damaturu’s first-ever flyover.

According to a statement issued by Yusuf Ali, Focal Person for Digital and Strategic Communications, the remodeling project will be spearheaded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, with a directive to upgrade major roads and infrastructure across the city.

Commissioner for Housing, Arc. Ahmad Buba, emphasized that the redesign would integrate modern infrastructural elements while preserving Yobe’s rich cultural heritage. Advanced streetlights and lush landscaping are expected to enhance the city’s visual appeal, transforming Damaturu into a more vibrant and livable urban environment.

Each roundabout has been uniquely designed to reflect Yobe State’s distinct identity:

  • Gashua Road Roundabout: Featuring an aeroplane design, this landmark symbolizes the state’s investment in aviation and its commitment to global connectivity, situated strategically on the road leading to the Damaturu International Cargo Airport.
  • Gujba Road Roundabout: Adorned with a canoe sculpture, paying homage to the 8,000-year-old Dufuna Canoe, a significant archaeological artifact showcasing Yobe’s deep historical roots.
  • Potiskum Road Roundabout: Incorporating cultural motifs that celebrate the diverse and vibrant traditions of the state.
  • Maiduguri Road Roundabout: Designed with a calabash motif, representing Yobe’s enduring cultural heritage and its reputation for hospitality and craftsmanship.

The project is expected to elevate Damaturu’s status as a cultural and infrastructural hub in the Northeast. Officials have hinted that the animation of the proposed designs offers a glimpse into the city’s future, aligning with Governor Buni’s vision of a modernized yet tradition-conscious state.

Construction work is slated to commence soon, marking another milestone in Damaturu’s ongoing transformation.
