Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, CON, COMN, has called on all 17 Local Government Council Chairmen to work in synergy with traditional rulers in implementing proactive strategies to curb drug abuse across the state.

In a statement signed by Mamman Mohammed, Director General, Press and Media Affairs to the Governor, Governor Buni expressed deep concern over the increasing rate of drug abuse in several Northern states, describing it as a growing menace that demands urgent attention.

“We must act now—proactively—to protect our youth and secure the future of Yobe State from the dangers of drug abuse currently threatening many regions,” the Governor emphasized.

He directed law enforcement agencies to ensure that the full weight of the law is brought to bear on anyone involved in the trafficking or consumption of illicit substances, reiterating his administration’s commitment to a drug-free society.

Governor Buni also commended the Federal Government, development partners, and traditional institutions for their contributions to improving primary healthcare delivery in the state. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to making healthcare accessible and affordable across Yobe.

“A healthy population is a valuable asset that drives socio-economic development. This administration remains focused on enhancing healthcare services for all,” he stated.

The Governor outlined notable strides made in the sector, including the establishment of 142 functional Primary Healthcare Centres, provision of modern equipment and essential drugs, and the recruitment and deployment of over 2,000 qualified health personnel statewide.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana, disclosed that an assessment by the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency had ranked Yobe among the top-performing states in routine immunization.

The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Primary Healthcare Agency, Dr. Baba Gana Kundi Machina, commended traditional leaders for their support in boosting immunization coverage. He noted a few challenges related to reconciliation and non-compliance, which he assured would be addressed in future vaccination rounds.
