Kanempress appeals for federal government to empower traditional institution

Kanempress, a media related non-governmental organization (NGO) that focuses majorly on news in and around Kanem-Borno region and of course Africa and global current affairs, has appealed to the federal government of Nigeria to empower the traditional institution in the country.

The NGO made this appeal at the Palace of the Emir of Damaturu on Sunday day, August 20th, 2023.

The appeal was made by the CEO/President of Kanempress, Zannah Ibrahim immediately after paying a courtesy visits to the Emir of Damaturu Alhaji Shehu Hashimi Ibn Umar Elkenemi.

According to the President, Kanempress believes that the traditional institution plays a vital role in nation building, especially in the areas of peace, security, social cohesion, cultural preservation, and grassroots development.

He highlighted the historical and contemporary contributions of the traditional institution in Nigeria, such as the famous Kanem Borno empire , and many others.

The statement read in part: “We at Kanempress are convinced that the traditional institution in Nigeria is not only relevant but indispensable in our quest for national unity, stability, and progress.

We therefore urge the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and federal government to continue recognizing and respecting the dignity and authority of our traditional rulers, and to empower them with effective powers, duties, and responsibilities in the running of our various governments.”

The media related organization also called on the federal government to consult and collaborate with the traditional rulers on matters of national interest, such as security, education, health, agriculture, environment, human rights and the current palliatives distributions and empowerment.

The statement further suggested that the federal government should keep encouraging the National Council of Traditional Rulers and to fully consider them as an advisory body to the President and other arms of government.

Kanempress also appealed to the Nigerian people to support and cooperate with their traditional rulers, and to appreciate their role as custodians of their culture, history, and identity.

The statement concluded by saying that “the traditional institution in Nigeria is a priceless heritage that we must cherish and protect for posterity.”
