In an era of rapid globalisation, preserving cultural heritage becomes paramount to safeguarding identities and fostering understanding among diverse communities.
Kanempress proudly launches its inaugural bulletin, dedicated to the noble mission of reconnecting the threads of Borno’s cultural heritage beyond geographical confines.
Borno, also known as Bornu, is a historical region in northeastern Nigeria, which was once the heart of the Kanem-Bornu Empire, one of the most powerful and influential states in African history. The empire spanned from the 8th to the 19th century, covering a vast territory that included parts of modern-day Chad, Niger, Cameroon and Libya. The empire was known for its cultural diversity, trade networks, military prowess and Islamic scholarship. The empire produced many renowned scholars, such as Uthman dan Fodio, Muhammad al-Kanemi and Muhammad Bello, who wrote on various subjects, such as theology, law, history, geography and poetry. The empire also had contact and influence with other regions and peoples of Africa, especially with the kingdoms of Ghana and Mali in West Africa.
However, the glory of the Kanem-Bornu Empire faded with the advent of colonialism, which divided and exploited the region. The legacy of the empire was further eroded by the challenges and conflicts that plagued the region in the post-colonial era, such as political instability, violence, poverty, displacement and marginalisation. The cultural heritage of Borno, which includes a distinctive language, religion, art, music, literature and cuisine, was also threatened by the loss of identity, memory and recognition.
Kanempress is a digital media platform that aims to revive and celebrate the cultural heritage of Borno across borders. Kanempress is founded by a team of passionate and visionary journalists, writers, artists, researchers and activists, who share a common bond and love for Borno and its culture. Kanempress is driven by the belief that culture is a powerful tool for social change, peace building and development. Kanempress is also inspired by the vision of a united and prosperous Africa, which values and respects its diverse and rich cultural heritage.
Kanempress’s inaugural bulletin is the first of a series of publications that will explore and showcase various aspects and dimensions of Borno’s cultural heritage, such as its history, language, religion, art, music, literature, cuisine and more. The bulletin will also feature stories and profiles of individuals and organisations that are working to preserve and promote Borno’s culture, both within and outside the region. The bulletin will also highlight the opportunities and challenges that Borno’s culture faces in the contemporary world, and the ways to address them.
Kanempress’s bulletin is not only a source of information, but also a platform for dialogue and collaboration. Kanempress invites and welcomes contributions and feedback from its readers, who are encouraged to share their views, opinions, experiences and suggestions on Borno’s culture and its relevance and role in the world. Kanempress also seeks to establish and strengthen partnerships with international organisations, cultural institutions and academic communities, who share a common interest and vision for Borno’s culture and its preservation and promotion.
Culture knows no borders, and Kanempress is dedicated to fostering dialogue and collaboration on a global scale. Through partnerships with international organisations, cultural institutions and academic communities, we aim to amplify Borno’s cultural voice on the world stage. We also hope to inspire and empower the people of Borno, especially the youth, to reclaim and celebrate their cultural identity and potential. We believe that by reconnecting the dots of Borno’s cultural legacy, we can also reconnect the dots of Africa’s cultural legacy, and contribute to the continent’s unity and prosperity.
