Lagos Welcomes Royalty: Mai Kanuribe’s Cultural Procession for the Shehu of Borno Mesmerizes the City

In a spectacle that combined tradition, regality, and the rich tapestry of Nigeria’s diverse heritage, Mai Kanuribe of Lagos, Alhaji Mai Mele Abatcha, orchestrated a grand reception for the esteemed Shehu of Borno upon his arrival at the Lagos Airport for the official function at University of Lagos (Unilag). His Eminence Shehu of Borno is the Chancellor of the great institution.

His Highness as the Chancellor often presiding over significant events such as convocations, graduations, and honorary degree ceremonies. This role is largely symbolic and contributes to the tradition and prestige of the institution.
This extraordinary gathering, marked by elaborate displays of traditional regalia, showcased the unwavering unity and respect between the bustling city of Lagos and the historic region of Borno.

As the Shehu’s aircraft graced the tarmac, Mai Kanuribe emerged in a resplendent ensemble, leading a large entourage that included his Waziri, District heads, and Zannahs, – all bedecked in their intricately designed traditional garments. The scene at the airport transformed into a vibrant kaleidoscope of colors, symbolizing the deep-rooted cultural ties that bind these dignitaries.The delegation accompanied the Shehu of Borno among others include, Abba Masta Abba Yusuf (Ibrahim Wadaima of Borno), Abba Anas Baba Gana (Shettima Kuburi of Borno), Zanna Laisu (Kazalma) Secretary Borno Emirate Council) Zanna Kachalla (Kachalla Ajibazam of Borno), Zanna Sadu Ballama (Zanna Ballama of Borno), Alh Atif Tujani, Ahmed Shettima Mustapha of BRTV Maiduguri

Another large delegation of Shuwa Arab led by their leader, Alhaji Umar Muhammad, his Waziri Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Abba Kaka, The senior Zannah Dujuma, Alhaji Jidda Sayid, Chairman of Forum of District heads, Aja Abiso, Head of Shettimas, Shettima Isa and hosts of other traditional title holders were gathered to received the Shehu of Borno.


The convoy, resembling a moving cultural panorama, paraded through the streets of Lagos right from the airport upto the University in a magnificent procession. Accompanied by traditional guards and CJTF, the entourage captivated onlookers and passersby, momentarily pausing the rhythm of daily life in the metropolis.

Mai Kanuribe extended a gracious welcome to the Shehu, the circumstances demonstrated a respect for cultural heritage and warm cultural unity shared between Lagos and Borno. The university grounds became a dynamic arena where the intersection of tradition and academia was celebrated.
This exceptional reception was not merely a display of pomp and circumstance but a tangible representation of the enduring cultural connections that transcend geographical boundaries within Nigeria.
Mai Kanuribe’s gesture highlighted the cultural richness of Borno in Lagos, and Lagos in Borno while showcasing the city as a melting pot of diversity, inclusivity, and respect for tradition.
