The United Nations has condemned the killing of at least 37 civilians in an ambush in Mukdolo village in Ngala local government of Borno state.
According to reports, many people, mostly farmers and fishermen, were shot dead in an attack allegedly carried out by ISWAP fighters.
The attack took place in the town of Dikwa which is close to the towns where the Boko Haram insurgents are strong.
Many people were injured in the attack while many others were missing. The farmers were killed on Wednesday when they went to the forest to look for firewood.
The security sources said that ISWAP’s best fighters attacked the town on motorcycles, where after they arrived, they started shooting at everyone. Nine people were able to escape.
In a statement issued by the UN Relief and Works Coordinator, Mr. Mathias Schmale, he expressed his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.
He said most of the victims are fishermen and farmers who are trying to earn a livelihood.
“This attack is a cause for concern and it once again shows the threat and insecurity of the refugees and other people who have been affected by the activities of the insurgents for more than 13 years in the area. People fled the village of Mukdolo before this attack due to the activities of jihadist groups,” the statement said.
Mr. Schmale called on the state authorities to quickly investigate the matter with the aim of punishing those found guilty.
