…Accuses Government of Double Standards After Pardoning Convicted Criminals

The Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN) has called on the Federal Government to immediately discontinue all charges against the detained Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari, describing his continued prosecution as “a grave injustice and a betrayal of national values.”

In a statement signed by its Comrade General, Solomon Dalung, MEN expressed shock that while the government recently granted presidential pardons to convicted drug traffickers, fraudsters, kidnappers, and bandits, the same gesture has not been extended to Kyari—an officer who arrested many of those criminals in the line of duty.

MEN said this selective application of clemency “ridicules the principle of fairness” and “undermines the integrity of the justice system.”

If hardened criminals are being forgiven and reintegrated into society, it is morally indefensible to continue the detention of a police officer whose only ‘crime’ was his patriotic commitment to fighting crime,” the statement read.

The group accused the government of operating a double standard, stating that the presidential amnesties have “destroyed the moral and legal basis for Kyari’s continued prosecution.”

MEN further described the situation as a dangerous precedent, warning that it could discourage law enforcement officers from putting their lives at risk in the fight against insecurity.

Justice must be consistent. Mercy cannot be reserved for the guilty while punishment is sustained against the patriotic,” MEN stated.

The group therefore urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Attorney-General of the Federation to discontinue the case and secure Kyari’s immediate release, insisting that anything short of that would amount to a travesty of justice.

DCP Abba Kyari, once celebrated for leading major anti-crime operations in Nigeria, has been in detention since 2022 over allegations related to drug trafficking and misconduct—claims he has consistently denied.
