The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) is gearing up for a landmark event as it prepares to host its 7th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference (NDC) on Friday, March 28, 2025, at Festival Hotels, Amuwo Odofin, Festac Town, Lagos.

This highly anticipated gathering promises to be a momentous occasion, celebrating the union’s past achievements, electing new leadership, and recognizing the exceptional contributions of maritime industry trailblazers.

A key highlight of the conference will be a prestigious awards ceremony, where Alhaji Dr. Ahmed Tijjani Ramalan will be honored for his groundbreaking role as the Pioneer Chairman of the Joint Maritime Labour Industrial Council (JOMALIC) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

Ramalan’s visionary leadership and efforts to establish a comprehensive maritime labour leadership framework have paved the way for others in the industry, earning him the coveted Prestigious Award for Leadership.

His pioneering work has created a foundation that continues to shape the maritime labour landscape, making a profound impact on the sector’s evolution.

In addition to Ramalan’s recognition, the conference will honor other maritime icons whose contributions have left an indelible mark on the industry.

These individuals will be celebrated for their steadfast commitment and efforts in advancing the cause of maritime workers in Nigeria.

The conference also marks a significant moment in MWUN’s history, as under the leadership of Comrade (Prince) Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, the union will launch its first-ever historical publication: “History of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria 1996 to 2024”. This meticulously researched book chronicles the union’s journey, documenting its struggles, triumphs, and milestones over the past three decades.

The publication offers a valuable reference for both current industry players and future generations, ensuring that the legacy of MWUN and its workers is preserved for posterity.

As the conference ushers in a new chapter for MWUN, it will also signify the end of an era with the smooth and orderly transition of leadership. In line with MWUN’s constitution, which limits leadership tenure to two four-year terms, Comrade Adeyanju will pass on the baton in a show of democratic integrity and respect for the union’s guiding principles.

His leadership will be remembered for its focus on advocacy, service, and the strengthening of solidarity within Nigeria’s maritime workforce.

The 7th Quadrennial NDC is not just a celebration of the past; it is a reaffirmation of MWUN’s commitment to building a united and prosperous future for Nigeria’s maritime workers.

With a strong foundation and forward-thinking leadership, the union continues to chart a course for greater achievements in the years to come.
