Nigerian Vice President Chairs National Economic Council

Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently chairing the session of the National Economic Council.

The meeting, which started at 13:20 GMT, is taking place at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting is being attended by State Governors, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, and the representative of the Apex Bank boss among others.

The National Economic Council is a statutory body which advises the President on economic matters.

It is expected that Thursday’s meeting will centre on the recent fluctuations in the price of premium motor spirit, as well as the rising cost of food items and transportation.

One of Nigeria’s business mogul, Aliko Dangote and American Business tycoon, Bill Gates are also attending the meeting to brief the Council on business and health-related issues.

Meanwhile, the National Economic Council (NEC has reconstituted its committee on floods in response to the ongoing efforts to tackle the recurring issue of floods.

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule disclosed this while briefing Journalists at the meeting of the council, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Governor Sule said states, which are yet to submit their flood reports were given a deadline of Monday 9th September to do so.

The meeting of the National Economic Council, held once every month under the Chairmanship of the Vice President, brings together Governors of the 36 States of Nigeria, including some Ministers and the Apex Bank boss among other Stakeholders, to advise the President on economic matters and other issues of national interest.

Briefing Journalists at the meeting for September, Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule said the council noted how the flood had devastated some parts of Nigeria and so, it has reconstituted its committee on the flood, to alleviate the plight of affected states and persons.

He said: “The issue of flood was intensively discussed and the flood committee had to be reconstituted currently to have new members of the council as follows; the Governors of Kogi, Akwa Ibom, Oyo, Ebonyi, Bauchi and Jigawa State.
