The Director-General of Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr. Barkindo Saidu, has described the devastating effects of Saturday’s suicide attacks in Gwoza, Borno State.

According to Saidu, “So far, we have 18 deaths, comprising children, adult males, females, and pregnant women, while the 19 persons that are seriously injured were conveyed to Maiduguri in four ambulances.”

The attacks, which targeted a wedding and funeral, resulted in multiple casualties, including pregnant women and children.

Saidu, who was at the scene, reported that the degree of injuries ranged from abdominal ruptures, skull and limb fractures.

He stated, “In the first blast, a female suicide bomber detonated it at a marriage ceremony, injuring over 30 and causing instant deaths… In the second blast, it was almost like the first. It occurred near the general hospital. The third blast happened at a funeral service (Janaiza). Another female suicide bomber detonated it, causing more casualties.”

Saidu also confirmed receiving a report of a suspected suicide bombing in Pulka town, also in Gwoza LGA, but did not give further details.

He emphasized the need for emergency drugs to complement the shortage of drugs in Gwoza, saying, “I have mobilised emergency drugs to complement the shortage of drugs in Gwoza.”

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has urged the federal government to end the killings in Borno without further delay.

Ndume said, “The last attack at the weekend was a big shock. We need to double our efforts. Our military is trying, and we must commend them. But they need to raise their game and take out these people. The recent attack in my community, Gwoza, is unacceptable.”

Ndume also called on the military to double its efforts, saying they have successfully reduced cases of terrorism in the state.

“I’m visiting to ascertain the level of the attack and see how we can bring help to those affected. We call on the federal government to do something and bring this carnage to an end. This is my appeal.”
