Residents of Gashua Road in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, are calling for answers and immediate action from the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) regarding the ongoing and selective power supply issues they have been facing.

Kanempress learnt that, Despite consistent payments, the residents claim they receive inadequate electricity service compared to other areas.

Idriss Aminu, Muhammad Adam Ibrahim, Muhammad Yau, and Muhammad Abdulkadir Abubakar, all residents of the affected community, voiced their frustrations on their social media accounts, highlighting the disparity in power distribution. They reported that while other areas enjoy regular electricity, Gashua Road is left in darkness for most of the day, only receiving power for short, inconsistent periods at night.

“The power came at 12:10 am and was taken away at 4:09 am. This is how we spend the whole day without power, and they will only bring it back at 12:00 am again. Yet, we are expected to pay our bills by the end of the month,” lamented Idriss Aminu.

Muhammad Adam Ibrahim echoed these sentiments, expressing his frustration over the situation. “We see power in the town, but our FEEDER does not get it. When they do bring it, it doesn’t even last an hour before it’s taken away again, causing damage to our appliances.”

The residents’ complaints come amid nationwide concerns about the reliability of the National Grid and the overall power supply. However, the specific targeting of Gashua Road for these interruptions has raised questions about the operational fairness of YEDC.

Residents are now urging the state government and regulatory bodies to investigate YEDC’s practices and ensure that all areas, including Gashua Road, receive their fair share of power. They demand that the manager of YEDC provide a public explanation for these issues. If no satisfactory response is given, the residents plan to escalate their complaints directly to the main headquarters in Yola.

“This month, we will hire lawyers, file a complaint, and reject the bill for this month. We cannot pay for what we have not used,” stated Muhammad Yau.

Muhammad Abdulkadir Abubakar added, “We have prominent people and media personnel in Gashua Road. It is time we took legal and orderly measures to stop this injustice. If the current manager cannot address our concerns, we demand his dismissal and the appointment of someone capable of effectively communicating with customers.”

The call for accountability is growing louder as the affected residents demand answers and fair treatment from YEDC.

The state government and relevant authorities are urged to address these concerns promptly to prevent further dissatisfaction and unrest.
