In a landmark push for deeper grassroots governance, the people of Bama Local Government Area in Borno State are set to present a formal memorandum advocating for the creation of additional local government areas within Bama LGA.
The event, which many have described as historic and community-driven, will be held on Friday, July 4, 2025, at the Muhammadu Indimi Hall, University of Maiduguri, by 9:00 AM prompt.
Spearheading the initiative is His Royal Highness, Dr. Umar Kyari Umar Ibrahim El-Kanemi, the Shehu of Bama, whose visionary leadership has once again underscored the emirate’s commitment to sustainable development, peace, and inclusive representation.
Royal Leadership Meets Grassroots Mobilisation
The Shehu, widely respected across the Northeast for his wisdom, resilience, and unifying leadership during years of insurgency and displacement, is at the forefront of this initiative, working closely with community leaders and local government stakeholders to champion the administrative decentralization of Bama.
The creation of additional local governments within Bama is not merely a political demand — it is a community-driven call for equity, development, and improved governance for our people,” said Hon. Alh. Ali Guja, Chairman of Bama LGA, in a statement ahead of the event.
Who’s Expected?
The official presentation will bring together:
Traditional title holders from the Bama Emirate
Eminent sons and daughters of the emirate
Top government functionaries
Civil society leaders
Opinion shapers and advocates for inclusive governance
The presence of these stakeholders is expected to lend weight to the memorandum and reinforce the people’s collective aspiration for progress and enhanced local governance.
Bama: A Symbol of Resilience and Rebirth
Bama, once at the epicenter of the Boko Haram insurgency, has become a symbol of resilience, communal unity, and reconstruction. Through tireless efforts by its people, and with the steady guidance of HRH the Shehu, the community continues to rebuild — stronger and more determined than ever.
From post-conflict resettlement to educational and health reforms, the Bama Emirate has made remarkable strides under a leadership model that blends tradition with forward-looking governance.
This memorandum is a bold step toward empowering our people, enhancing service delivery, and bringing government closer to those it serves,” Hon. Guja added.
A Call for Equity
At the heart of the demand is the desire for fair representation, efficient resource management, and tailored developmental programs. Stakeholders say new LGAs will help tackle unique local challenges and support long-term peacebuilding efforts in the region.
As anticipation builds, all eyes are on the Muhammadu Indimi Hall at the University of Maiduguri, where the people of Bama will converge to make history. The event is more than a memorandum presentation — it is a loud, unified call for justice, development, and grassroots empowerment.
All Roads Lead to Maiduguri
Observers believe the presentation may set a precedent for other local government areas across Nigeria, especially those with large populations and complex administrative needs.
The Spirit of Bama Endures
Once ravaged by insurgency, Bama has risen with dignity, not just through rebuilding homes and infrastructure, but through rebuilding trust, identity, and hope. At the heart of this resurgence is His Royal Highness, the Shehu of Bama, whose leadership has consistently inspired unity and resilience among his people.
We are not asking for privilege; we are asking for what is just, fair, and necessary for our people to thrive,” a community elder told The Guardian ahead of the presentation
The move for additional LGAs is seen not just as an administrative realignment, but as a bold assertion of Bama’s right to define its own future, under the law, through peace, and by the will of its people.
