The Sudanese army has announced that it has successfully recaptured the presidential palace in the capital, Khartoum, from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after nearly two years of fierce fighting. This significant victory comes as the army has been making notable advances against the RSF in recent months, gaining control of key territories previously held by the paramilitary group.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s de facto president and army chief, declared that “there will be no negotiations until these people are no more,” referring to the RSF. This statement underscores the military’s resolve to eliminate the RSF and restore full control over Sudan. Despite this reclaiming of the country’s seat of power, however, the army is still far from ending the war entirely, as large parts of Sudan, particularly in the western and southern regions, remain under RSF control.

The battle for Khartoum also appears to be ongoing, with the RSF releasing a statement claiming its fighters are still active in the capital, suggesting that the conflict is far from over. This raises questions about the extent of the army’s victory and whether it marks a turning point in the nearly two-year-long war.

The conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between Sudan’s army and the RSF, has resulted in widespread violence and displacement, leaving millions of civilians caught in the crossfire. With both sides entrenched in their positions, the road to peace remains uncertain, and the future of Sudan’s stability remains precarious.
