Troops Repel ISWAP Attack on Military Base in Borno

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai successfully repelled an attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists on a military base in Mayanti, Banki, within Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the attack occurred around 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, when ISWAP fighters launched an assault on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Mayanti. However, the troops stationed at the base mounted a strong resistance, engaging the terrorists in a fierce firefight that forced them to retreat.
Ambush on Reinforcement Team
Shortly after the failed attack, at about 2:03 a.m., a reinforcement team heading toward the base fell into an ambush by ISWAP insurgents along the Banki Junction–Mayanti road. The terrorists had planted two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along the route, intending to hinder the movement of the military personnel.
A Quick Reaction Force (QRF), led by the unit commander, swiftly responded, engaging the insurgents in combat and forcing them to flee.
Casualties and Security Response
While there were no reported casualties from the initial attack on the base, two soldiers sustained injuries during the ambush and were immediately evacuated for medical treatment.
Military authorities have reassured the public of their commitment to securing the region, emphasizing that counterterrorism operations will be intensified to eliminate insurgent threats in Borno State and the wider Northeast region.
The latest attack highlights the continued security challenges in the Lake Chad region, where ISWAP and Boko Haram insurgents have remained active despite sustained military offensives. However, the Nigerian military has vowed to remain resolute in its fight against terrorism, ensuring the safety of both military personnel and civilians in the affected areas.
