The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert to American citizens and embassy staff, urging them to avoid visiting Nigerian military installations and government facilities due to heightened global tensions and local security concerns.

In a statement released on Sunday via the U.S. Embassy website, the advisory warned of potential threats, emphasizing the current volatility following a series of global and regional conflicts.

“Due to increased security concerns arising from current global developments, U.S. Mission Nigeria informs U.S. citizens that all U.S. Embassy employees and their families are prohibited from non-official travel to Nigerian military sites or government venues in Abuja at this time,” the advisory read.

The embassy also advised all U.S. citizens in Nigeria to remain vigilant, especially in public spaces frequented by Westerners, expatriates, and government officials.

“Stay alert in public places. Avoid large gatherings and consider limiting unnecessary travel. Avoid predictable routines. Familiarize yourself with emergency exits when entering buildings,” the statement urged.

The warning comes amid rising international tensions following the U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities over the weekend and ongoing missile exchanges between Iran and Israel. It also follows a devastating suicide bombing carried out by Boko Haram in Borno State that killed more than 20 people, reigniting fears over local extremist activity.

While there has been no direct threat targeting U.S. facilities or citizens in Nigeria, the advisory reflects a broader caution in response to escalating conflict zones across the Middle East and increasing instability in parts of Nigeria.

Security experts are urging citizens—foreign and local—to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.

In the meantime, the U.S. Mission says it continues to monitor the situation closely and will update its citizens as needed.

For emergency assistance, U.S. citizens are advised to contact the U.S. Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos.

📌 Safety Tips from the U.S. Mission:

Avoid military or government sites unless officially cleared

Keep travel discreet and avoid high-profile appearances

Be aware of your surroundings, especially in public places

Keep emergency numbers and ID accessible at all times

Monitor local news and updates from official sources

Stay safe. Stay informed.
