*……………Freedom of the press is not just important to democracy; it is democracy.” – Walter Cronkite*

As the world marks World Press Freedom Day 2025, the echo of silenced pens and shuttered microphones reminds us that truth remains the most endangered species in the digital age. At Kanempress Digital Hub, we pause to celebrate—not merely the idea of press freedom, but the relentless courage it takes to pursue truth where danger thrives and censorship looms.

This year’s theme, “Journalism in the Face of Crises,” hits especially close to home. In the global south, and particularly across conflict-affected regions like northeastern Nigeria, journalism is more than a profession—it is resistance. It is voice. It is survival.

In Borno State and beyond, local reporters and digital storytellers brave not just bombs and bullets, but also broadband blackouts, economic hardship, and governmental protocols. Yet they persist, reporting on displacement, insurgency, recovery, and resilience—often without recognition, sometimes without pay, but never without purpose.

*Digital Media: The New Frontier of Resistance*

Kanempress Digital Hub was born out of the need to amplify underrepresented voices and bridge the information gap across marginalized communities. In a world increasingly ruled by misinformation, we use digital platforms not just to inform, but to empower. With mobile phones as newsrooms and courage as capital, young journalists in our network continue to tell untold stories—of widowed women rebuilding economies, of youth shaping peace processes, and of communities refusing to be defined by war. More so, a good overwhelming transformative effort of Prof Babagana Umara Zulum in rebuilding the state against all odds and challenges.

Yet, even in the digital space, press freedom is fragile. Surveillance, algorithmic suppression, and cyber threats are the new front lines. As we invest in media literacy and innovation, we also advocate for stronger protections for digital journalists, independent media startups, and grassroots truth-tellers.

*The Global Picture: Alarming and Urgent*

According to Reporters Without Borders, more than 70 journalists have been killed in the line of duty since last year alone, and dozens more remain imprisoned without trial. Authoritarian regimes have perfected the art of silencing dissent through both brute force and legislative muzzling. From Gaza to Myanmar, from Tehran to Texas, the message is chilling: where truth is dangerous, journalism becomes criminal.

*A Call to Action*

On this day of reflection and recommitment, Kanempress Digital Hub joins hands with journalists, advocates, and citizens around the world in demanding:

Legal protections for all journalists, especially freelancers and community reporters.

Access to information as a fundamental right—not a privilege.

Digital equity to ensure no voice is excluded from the global conversation.

End to impunity for crimes against journalists.

We must not only protect the right to publish, but also the right of the public to know.

*Finally Press Freedom Is Power*

To silence the press is to blindfold democracy. At Kanempress Digital Hub, we believe every truth told pushes tyranny back a step. Every headline forged in honesty is a brick in the foundation of a freer future.

As we commemorate this vital day in 2025, let us not only celebrate freedom of the press—we must defend it, demand it, and deliver it. For where the press is free, the people are, too.
