Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum, mni, has urged the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to prioritize projects that deliver long-term benefits and significantly boost infrastructure across the six northeastern states.Governor Zulum made the call on Tuesday during a meeting at the Government House with the expanded management and board of the NEDC, led by the State Minister of Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmodu.Highlighting key priorities, Zulum emphasized the importance of security, development of Dry Inland Ports, leveraging the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), establishing independent electricity supply, and improving road networks within the region. The Governor remarked, “We have surpassed more than half of the NEDC’s lifespan as defined by the act that established it. This funding window will not last forever. It is critical that we focus on projects that will provide maximum, lasting benefits.”He further stressed the need for accountability and performance, stating, “We cannot afford to underperform compared to other commissions. There must be clear benchmarks to measure success. Otherwise, there will come a time when all of you from the northeast, including the minister, the chairman of the House committee, and the MD, will be called upon for the lack of tangible results within your tenure.”Despite these demands, Governor Zulum assured the NEDC leadership of the full support and commitment of the Northeast Governors Forum in helping the commission fulfill its mandate. He also praised the commission for its ongoing humanitarian aid efforts and contributions to educational and community projects that have positively impacted the lives of Borno State residents.Earlier, State Minister of Regional Development Uba Maigari Ahmodu highlighted the importance of close cooperation with the Northeast Governors Forum to realize the broader objectives of the North East Stabilisation and Development Plan (NESDP).The minister pledged that his ministry would ensure robust oversight of the NEDC’s activities to facilitate the rebuilding and stabilization of the northeast, which has been severely affected by years of insurgency and economic disruption. The NEDC delegation included Hon. Usman Zannah, Chairman of the House Committee on NEDC, other committee members, Major General Paul C. Tarfa (Rtd), Chairman of the NEDC board, Mohammed Goni Alkali, MD/CEO of the commission, and senior management officials.
