Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has pledged unwavering support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as part of his administration’s efforts to stimulate economic recovery in the state.
This commitment was reiterated during his visit to Coplad Nigeria Ltd., a rice milling factory located along the Maiduguri-Bama highway.
During his visit on Tuesday, Governor Zulum highlighted the vital role that SMEs play in job creation and poverty alleviation, particularly as Borno continues to heal from the impacts of over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency. He noted that fostering a robust SME sector is essential for the state’s economic revitalization.
In previous initiatives, Governor Zulum approved the disbursement of N814 million to support 9,154 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in 2022. His administration has consistently invested in economic empowerment, with N900 million allocated to empower 13,500 SMEs across various local government areas in 2021. That same year, he also distributed N350 million to approximately 4,250 artisans and traders within Maiduguri and Jere.
Zulum’s commitment extends beyond financial support; he has facilitated the distribution of vehicles to boost local businesses. In 2021 alone, he provided 100 brand new Toyota taxis and 500 KEKE NAPEP tricycles at subsidized rates in Maiduguri and Biu.
During his recent visit to Coplad Ltd., the governor directed the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Investment to conduct an assessment of the company’s challenges and recommend ways for government assistance. He emphasized the importance of maintaining consistent production at the factory to ensure its growth and contribution to Borno’s economic prosperity.
“I want to assure you that we will give you all the necessary support,” Zulum stated. “However, I expect your company to maintain steady operations without interruptions. We need both short-term and long-term solutions to ensure continuous functionality.”
Additionally, he instructed the Ministry of Agriculture to provide Coplad Ltd. with locally cultivated paddy rice from government stock. Zulum encouraged the management of Coplad Ltd. to consider expanding their operations by establishing additional modular setups to create more job opportunities for residents.
With these initiatives, Governor Zulum aims not only to support existing businesses but also to foster a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem that can drive economic growth in Borno State.
