Under the leadership of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the Borno State Government allocated approximately N9.7 billion in scholarships to support students in tertiary institutions both within Nigeria and abroad in 2024. Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, revealed this during a press briefing following the first Executive Council meeting of 2025.
Highlights of the scholarship programme include:
- 30,616 undergraduate students in Nigeria received N4.29 billion.
- 335 local postgraduate students in STEM fields received N382 million.
- 132 international undergraduate students studying Medicine and Engineering in China and Egypt received N2.33 billion.
- 287 international postgraduate students in STEM courses in India and Malaysia received N2.69 billion.
The scholarship initiative, part of Governor Zulum’s 10-year transformation agenda and 25-year development plan, aims to address workforce needs and support Borno State’s recovery from insurgency challenges. Additional scholarships and sponsorships are planned for 2025.
The state also focused on enhancing educational infrastructure, constructing mega schools and classrooms, recruiting qualified teachers, and reducing the number of out-of-school children. Governor Zulum, alongside stakeholders like the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Scholarship Board, Mallam Bala Isa, have been pivotal in providing these educational opportunities.
