Dr. Mairo Mandara Named Finalist for 2024 USIP Women Building Peace Award

The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) proudly announced the three finalists of the 2024 Women Building Peace Award, recognizing exceptional women in peacebuilding.
In a statement from Prof. Usman Tar, Commissioner of Information and Internal Security, Borno State, it was revealed that one of the distinguished finalists is Dr. Mairo Mandara. Dr. Mandara, the Chief Adviser to the Borno State Governor on Sustainable Development, Partnerships, and Humanitarian Affairs, and the Coordinator of the Humanitarian Agency, is celebrated for her tireless efforts in coordinating humanitarian activities and driving sustainable development and peacebuilding in Borno State.
Dr. Mandara has made significant contributions to girls’ education and empowerment. As the founder of the Girl Child Concern (GCC), she established a secondary school for girls displaced by the insurgency, and during the height of the Boko Haram crisis, successfully campaigned for the education of over 250 internally displaced girls from Borno and Yobe States. Many of these girls have since graduated from universities, while others continue their education.
The USIP highlights the extraordinary dedication of the finalists, selected from nominations of women peacebuilders from 52 countries. These women, including Dr. Mairo Mandara, Lilly BeSoer, and Visaka Dharmadasa, exemplify leadership and commitment to creating sustainable peace in their communities.
