The Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) has chosen Nigeria’s former military head of state, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and the influential Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Abubakar, as envoys to mediate in Niger.
According the reports gathered by TCR they will be joined by Alieu Touray, president of the ECOWAS Commission.
Earlier, ECOWAS sent delegations led by the Presidents of Benin and Chad to engage with the coup plotters.
As a response, ECOWAS imposed sanctions, including a travel ban and blockade on Niger, until President Mohamed Bazoum is reinstated.
Additionally, the bloc threatened the use of force and summoned defense chiefs of the sub-region. Notably, some countries were absent from the defense chiefs’ meeting in Abuja, namely Mali, Niger, Guinea Bissau, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.
