Yobe State governor,Hon Mai Mala Buni CON,(Chiroman Gujba) has initiated the construction of four new hubs for cleaning and packing sesame seeds in different parts of the state. The project, which was approved by the state executive council in January 2023, cost N379.4 million and involved the procurement of Julite sesame seeds clearing and packing machines in Machina, Nguru, Potiskum and Damaturu towns.
The aim of the project is to enhance the quality and value of sesame seeds, which is a major cash crop in Yobe State. All the 17 local government areas of the state, especially those in the northern region, are engaged in the cultivation of sesame seeds.
The state government has also received interest from some international companies in Europe and the Middle East to commence trade in sesame seeds and livestock once the cargo airport constructed by the state government becomes operational.
The construction of the four sesame seeds cleaning and packing hubs is progressing well, with the least at 30% completion stage.
The governor has expressed his commitment to boosting sesame seeds production and other agricultural activities for economic development. He said that the youths in Yobe are ready to embrace commercial agriculture not only to meet the state’s food needs but also to export for economic growth.
Recalled that governor Buni has always demonstrated his industrial mindset by building three multi-billion naira mega markets in Damaturu, Gashua and Nguru, while Potiskum and Geidam are under construction. He is also constructing a modern mega city mall in Damaturu, the state capital.
These facilities will improve the scale and volume of trade across the state and benefit the farmers who form a large portion of the state economy.
