On the second day of his project commissioning tour in southern Borno State, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum unveiled six significant projects across two local government areas.
After commissioning two projects in Biu on Thursday and spending the night in Kwaya-Kusar, Governor Zulum continued his tour on Friday. The projects unveiled included a 60-classroom Islamic college, aimed at combating violent extremism and preventing the radicalization of young people by terrorist groups. The Governor of Gombe State, Mohammed Inuwa, performed the symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony.
In his address at the High Islamic College, Governor Zulum highlighted his administration’s policies to integrate almajiri pupils into a formal educational process. He emphasized the importance of the Tsangaya education system, which has been a cornerstone of Islamic learning in the region, and the need to blend it with modern educational practices to equip children with essential skills for today’s world.
Governor Zulum stated, “Our approach to this reform has been both strategic and inclusive, ensuring that we preserve the essence of the Tsangaya system while integrating it with modern educational practices to equip our children with the skills they need to thrive in today’s world.” He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that no child in Borno State is left behind, regardless of their educational background. As part of this vision, the administration has pledged to establish one higher Islamic college in each of the state’s 27 local government areas.
Following the commissioning, Governor Zulum distributed bicycles to students from nearby villages to facilitate easier transportation. Other projects commissioned included ten units of two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows for teachers, aimed at improving their living conditions. During the estate’s commissioning, Governor Zulum directed the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation to prioritize the rehabilitation of existing staff quarters and the construction of new ones in the 2025 budget.
Additionally, the governor commissioned an ICT center in Biryel and two government lodges, one each in Kwaya-Kusar and Bayo Local Government Areas. The sixth project was the comprehensive primary healthcare center in Fikayel, Bayo Local Government Area.
