SPSP to Study Governor’s Efforts as a Global Peace Model

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State was honored with a fellowship by the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) on Monday at the Government House in Maiduguri. The honor was bestowed by SPSP President, Nathaniel Msen Awuapila, and Professor Isaac Oluwale Albert, representing the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

Governor Zulum is a distinguished fellow of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers (NIAE), and the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA). Additionally, he holds honorary fellowships from the National Postgraduate Medical College and the Environmental Management Association of Nigeria (EMAN).

Expressing his gratitude, Governor Zulum reaffirmed his dedication to collaborating with the SPSP to achieve sustainable peace and development in the region. He highlighted the success of non-kinetic measures, noting that over 200,000 former insurgents and their families had surrendered to authorities.

The ceremony was attended by prominent officials, including Dr. Bukar Tijani, Secretary to the Borno State Government; Barrister Mallam Fannami, Head of Services; Dr. Babagana Malumbe, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Executive Governor; Professor Jude Momodu, SPSP Vice President; Dr. Lanre Yusuf, SPSP Secretary General; members of the Borno State Executive Council, and other senior government officials.

In a related development, the SPSP announced plans to commission a study on the positive impact of Governor Zulum’s initiatives. SPSP President Nathaniel Msen Awuapila praised Governor Zulum, stating, “Your Excellency, you are a model in post-conflict reconstruction, managing post-conflict societies, and peacebuilding and development. These are qualities evident in your work in Borno over the years, especially in infrastructural development.”

He added, “The society has decided to commission a study to understand the impact of your contributions, aiming to model your success for others in the Sahel region and beyond.”

Professor Albert also commended the Governor for his impactful projects across Borno State, stating, “We are here to honor ourselves by associating with your achievements and expressing our pride in your accomplishments. We have seen and touched the projects you have undertaken, both in print and in person.”
