According to Phuong T. Nguyen, the Chief of Field Officer North East Nigeria for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a staggering 1.6 million children in Borno Adamawa and Yobe states are currently not enrolled in school.
Furthermore out of those children who do attend school an alarming 72% are unable to read a basic text by the time they reach Grade 6.
Nguyen said this early Wednesday in Maiduguri while emphasized that without acquiring essential foundational and transferable skills these children will struggle to succeed in both their educational journey and in life.
In response to this crisis,UNICEF is determined to ensure that no child is left behind in Nigeria’s quest to improve education. The organization along with the government donor agencies and other development partners is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of fundamental learning.
Additionally UNICEF is eager to share innovative strategies and techniques that have been successfully implemented in Nigeria to accelerate education delivery.
The chief field officer acknowledged that UNICEF in collaboration with the Borno, Adamawa and Yobe state governments have convened a knowledge sharing seminar on scaling Fundamental Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) in North-east Nigeria.
The seminar is aimed to expand horizon of understanding and awareness of FLN models and lessons from the implementation of fundamental learning programmes in the region with special consideration on the ongoing humanitarian development nexus in the region.
