The African Union has expressed its backing for the West African regional organization, ECOWAS, in light of the recent coup in Niger.

Moussa Faki Mahamat, the chairman of the African Union, released a statement indicating his endorsement of ECOWAS’ approach to addressing the situation in Niger.

Following a crucial summit in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, ECOWAS directed its military leaders to prepare an intervention force for potential deployment in Niger, with an emphasis on pursuing peaceful resolutions.

Mahamat also reiterated his call for the immediate release of ousted Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, as well as all members of his family and government, stressing that the treatment they’re receiving is unacceptable.

The events leading to this were triggered on July 26, when presidential guard officers ousted Bazoum from power.

Abdourahamane Tchiani, the commander of the elite unit, declared himself the new ruler and dissolved the constitution.

Bazoum and his family have been confined to his residence for over two weeks.

Niger had been an exception in the “coup belt” of the Sahel region, with its democratic government being a critical partner in the fight against Islamic terrorism.

The international community has also denounced the coup and urged the coup leaders to restore order and relinquish power.
